BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Kathy Heinlein, Board Chair

Kathy Heinlein has been a resident of Anchorage for 22 years. A graduate of the Colorado School of Mines, Kathy worked in the petroleum industry as an exploration and production geophysicist for 20+ years, including 12 years in Alaska. Currently semi-retired to focus on raising her family, Kathy is the parent of three children: one PNA alum, one soon-to-be PNA alum, and one still attending PNA. An active volunteer who is passionate about giving back to her community, Kathy has been active in several organizations in Alaska and Outside. She has served as a Board member and past Chair of the Board of Trustees of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School in Anchorage and is a past-president of the Alaska Geophysical Society and Alaska Families with Children from China. As a PNA parent, Kathy has supported the school in many ways, including serving as Parent Association President, an executive member of the Auction Committee, and chair of the Board Development Committee.

GOVERNANCE

The Board of Trustees is the guardian of the school's mission. It is the Board's responsibility to ensure that the mission is appropriate, relevant and vital to the community that it serves and to monitor the success of the school in fulfilling its mission.

The following principles of good practice are set forth to provide a common perspective on the responsibilities of independent school boards. The Board and the Head work in partnership in fulfilling these principles.

  • The Board prepares a clear statement of the school's mission and objectives.

  • The Board is accountable for the financial well being of the school, including capital assets, operating budgets, fundraising and endowments.

  • The Board selects, supports, and collaborates with the Head of School.

  • The Board conducts a written annual evaluation of the performance of the Head and works with the Head to establish goals for the following year.

  • The Board keeps full and accurate records of its meetings, committees, and policies.

  • The Board works to ensure all its members are actively involved in the work of the Board and its committees.

  • The composition of the Board reflects a balance of the expertise and perspectives needed to achieve the mission of the school.

  • The Board develops itself through new trustee orientation, ongoing education and leadership succession planning.

  • The Board assures compliance with applicable laws and regulations and minimizes exposure to legal action.

Strategic plan

As a young school, still developing culture and traditions, Pacific Northern Academy has the energy and motivation to think “outside the box,” and to dare to be risk-taking and innovative in program and curriculum. At the same time, PNA is working hard to be fiscally prudent, yet rich in offerings and school culture. To accomplish these disparate goals is not uncomplicated, yet these must be accomplished in order to assure that PNA continues to provide students the best education possible. It is the map to our future and a window that looks out to the school that we are becoming.

pNA Financial Reports

Over the years, countless goals have been reached because of individuals who were involved at PNA personally and financially. We recognize that this support has enabled PNA to continue improving and advancing each year.

We are pleased to share with you the Annual Financial Report of Pacific Northern Academy for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 2019. Should you have any questions related to this report, please feel free to contact Kathy Cronen, kcronen@pacificnorthern.org.
